Pennsylvania, as of Saturday, has surpassed 78,000 positive coronavirus cases.
The state’s daily coronavirus release lists 483 new cases, bringing the total up to 78,483, and another 49 deaths brings the toll to 6,211. The data is available on the state’s COVID-19 database.
As the state started reporting negative tests and recovery rates in recent weeks, the database shows that total negative tests are up to 496,589 across the state. Of those who contracted the virus, 74% have recovered.
The state’s rolling average number of new cases per day over the last week is currently at 482 cases, same as it was on Thursday. Despite a large rise on Friday, new case numbers are steadily dropping; 482 per day is the lowest the average has been since March 29, when the number was 416. The next day, it was 492, a reminder of how rapidly the pandemic spread in its first weeks.

Coronavirus in Pennsylvania
The state now has one full week under its belt with every county at least in the yellow phase of Pennsylvania’s reopening plan, as the more populous counties, concentrated largely in the southeast part of the state, moved from red to yellow on June 5. More than half the state’s counties are in the green phase. Every county has had a positive case.

As the state reintroduces outdoor dining, limited shopping and other yellow-phase activities to counties with higher case counts, the state’s new case average will be key. Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine has said that it’s more important to have an eye on how the pandemic is trending rather than individual days, and this is especially of note as the state begins to reopen.
However, Gov. Tom Wolf’s office sent out a press release on Friday that noted Pennsylvania’s measured reopening plan has allowed the state to stay in a downward trend since hitting a peak in April. Meanwhile, numerous other states are seeing a rise, according to an Associated Press analysis mentioned in the release.
Despite the general decrease, nursing homes continue to be affected by the outbreak: 16,546 residents and 2,920 employees in 637 nursing homes across the state have tested positive for the virus, and 4,268 residents, or just over a quarter, have died.
Hospitals have also been a concern, as health professionals who are exposed to the virus daily are at great risk. 5,965 health care workers have tested positive.

Coronavirus in the Lehigh Valley
Northampton and Lehigh counties have been enjoying relaxed dining restrictions and other yellow phase changes since the Lehigh Valley left the red phase on June 5, but social distancing, masks and other preventative measures are required.
Lehigh County has 13 new cases Saturday with no new deaths and Northampton County has 15 cases and 3 deaths.
Cases in the Lehigh Valley have declined steadily in recent weeks. The average daily case count is minuscule now compared to each counties peak. Both counties’ rolling average is at 13 new cases per day, but back in April, that figure was exponentially higher. Both hit their peak on April 9, and Lehigh’s rolling average was 141 cases per day and Northampton’s was 82.
