For the first 11 days of July, Allegheny County posted 2,002 new cases of covid-19. In the first 11 days of August, the county had seen its new case count drop by more than 54%.

On Tuesday, the county’s health department posted another day — its fifth straight — of double-digit new coronavirus cases with 76. New cases range in age from 7 to 94 years, with a median age of 49 years. Of those cases, all but two were confirmed.

The new cases come from 986 test results gathered from Aug. 4-10.

Since Aug. 1, the county has posted 914 new positives cases, with 14,464 negative cases in that period. In August’s first 11 days, Allegheny County has a 5.94% positivity rate, compared with 10.1% for the first 11 days of July — when there were 2,002 positive and 17,824 negative cases.

There was one new death announced Tuesday by the county, a person in their 60s with a date of death of Aug. 7.

According to the state’s covid-19 tracking website, there are currently 137 Allegheny County residents in the hospital for the virus, with 32 of them on ventilators.

The county announced two new hospitalizations Tuesday, bringing the total who have been hospitalized for the virus to 737.

Of the 76 new cases announced Tuesday, 22 of them were among those ages 25-49, with 19 ages 50-64 and 18 ages 65 and older. One case showed up among those ages 5-12. More than half of the new cases (48) were among females, while 28 cases were among males.

Allegheny County’s website claims there have been outcomes in 6,230 cases so far — 5,970 are assumed to be recovered and 260 have died. In cases with an outcome, the recovery rate is 95.8%. Out of the county’s total of 9,008 covid-19 cases, there are still 2,778 cases without an assumed outcome.

The website counts individuals as recovered based on one of two conditions: It’s been 32 days since the person was hospitalized for covid-19 and not deceased; or, if they were not hospitalized, 14 days since they tested positive.

At the Allegheny County Jail, officials report there have been 35 total covid-19 infections, one more than was reported last week. Only one covid-19-positive inmate remains in the facility, with 35 having either recovered or been released. A total of 363 inmates have been tested, with 311 testing negative, with one inmate’s test still pending.

Among jail workers, 102 have been tested, with 11 positives, 90 negatives and one test still pending. Nine workers at the jail have recovered.

State and county health officials continue to urge residents to wear masks, wash their hands and maintain physical distance from others to keep the community safe.
