Riverside County officials say slowdown in coronavirus case growth is misleading - Press-Enterprise

A technical problem with California’s coronavirus reporting database is giving the false impression that the rise in new Riverside County cases is slowing, county officials said Monday, Aug. 3.

Lab data is not being submitted to the CalREDIE database in a timely manner, making it look like the county’s case growth in recent days is leveling out, Public Health Director Kim Saruwatari said in a news release.

“Simply put, there is a significant lag in how the information is being fed into the system,” she said. “We’re anticipating significant increases in case reporting this week.”

The delay affects the county’s positivity rate, the percentage of COVID-19 tests that come up positive for the virus, and how quickly public health workers can track cases, Saruwatari said. Hospitalization numbers and death rates are not affected.

Riverside County, which doesn’t update numbers on weekends, reported a 3% increase in confirmed cases between Friday, July 31, and Monday. COVID-19 deaths rose by 42 — 6% — from Friday to 737.

Officials also reported a massive increase in recoveries Monday. The county now says that of the 38,131 people who have tested positive, 19,699 have recovered. On Friday, only 13,050 people were listed as having recovered.

“We have made some adjustments on data and were able to catch recoveries that might have been missed in the past,” health department spokesman Jose Arballo Jr. said in an email.

He could not provide specifics on what was adjusted, but said the county’s method remains the same: Everyone who tests positive is contacted after their 14-day isolation period is up, and people who say they’re not experiencing symptoms are counted as recovered.

Here are the latest numbers, according to county and state public health officials.
