New coronavirus cases in the U.S. are ticking upward, passing more than 50,000 for the second day in a row after several days of declines, as parts of the country introduce checkpoints and other measures to contain the spread of the virus.

Chicago officials said they would begin the school year with online-only classes, as coronavirus cases rise in the city. Chicago health officials said the seven-day rolling average had reached 277 a day, up from under 200 four to five weeks ago. The rate of positive tests has risen to 4.8%, from 3.8% less than a month ago.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the schools decision was based on the evolving public-health situation and feedback from parents.
In New York City, checkpoints will be set up at bridges and tunnels to enforce a state quarantine order for people coming from states with high rates of Covid-19, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

People coming from states with elevated rates of Covid-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, are required to self-isolate for up to two weeks. Travelers who have been to one of 34 states and Puerto Rico will be required to fill out a health form for the city’s contact-tracing program and quarantine. Violators could be fined up to $10,000.
Across the U.S., new cases topped 52,000, bringing the total to more than 4.8 million, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The national death toll from the pandemic surpassed 158,000.
Florida’s total cases passed 500,000 as the state added 5,495, according to the state Department of Health. The rate of new cases there has eased somewhat after surging in July.
The number of confirmed cases in California dropped significantly in the beginning of the week, but the trend was in question after the state’s health department discovered an underreporting of cases. The California Department of Public Health cited “technology issues with the electronic laboratory reporting system, which reports into the state’s disease registry system,” according to a press release.
World-wide, cases now total 18.8 million with over 708,000 deaths as the virus continues to spread in Asia and European countries worry that new cases will accelerate there, too.
Confirmed daily cases in Germany passed 1,000 for the first time since early May, an important psychological barrier. Social distancing and other lockdown measures had pushed the number of new infections to as low as 159 a day last month, but since then the virus has spread through a number of localized outbreaks to reach over 213,000 cases. Travelers arriving in Germany from high risk regions—including the U.S.—will face mandatory testing beginning Saturday, Health Minister Jens Spahn said.
The U.K. is adding travelers arriving from Belgium to those who must self-isolate for 14 days after a rise in cases there after imposing the same quarantine requirement on arrivals from Spain two weeks ago.
India had 56,282 new cases, lifting its total to near two million, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported. The death toll rose by 904 to 40,699. At least eight Covid-19 patients were killed when a fire broke out early Thursday in a private hospital in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, a city official said.

A surge of new cases gathered pace in the Philippines, which recorded 3,561 new infections Thursday and bringing its total caseload to 119,460 and passing Indonesia.
Australia’s Victoria state reported 471 new cases and eight deaths, while New South Wales, home to Sydney, recorded 12 cases—all from community transmission. Business groups said a strict lockdown in Victoria’s capital, Melbourne, could upset national food-supply chains by closing many businesses and reducing output from others.
Levels of infections in Japan remain high. Tokyo on Thursday reported 360 new cases, topping 200 for the 10th day in a row. Nationwide, more than 1,000 cases have been reported in seven of the past eight days. Still, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that a new state of emergency for the country isn’t necessary, citing fewer fatalities and seriously ill patients than in the spring, when restrictions were tighter.
China’s health authorities reported 30 new locally transmitted cases, including 27 in the far northwestern Xinjiang region and three in the northeastern province of Liaoning. Since mid-July, clusters have emerged in the cities of Urumqi and Dalian, leading to more than 700 infections. Senior health officials on Wednesday said the outbreak had been effectively controlled, with the virus isolated and nucleic-acid gene sequencing in progress.
A Canadian preacher in Myanmar, meanwhile, was jailed to three months in prison after holding a church service in April despite a ban on public gatherings. David Lah, who was born in Myanmar, had declared in at least one sermon that Christians were immune to the coronavirus. Officials said Mr. Lah and about 20 others who took part in the service later tested positive for the virus.
