Emporia Public Schools is looking for a new superintendent.
As part of a special meeting Friday, Board President Mike Crouch says current superintendent Kevin Case resigned effective immediately, prompting board approval of a "separation agreement."
Case has not returned a phone call from KVOE News seeking comment.
Board of Education President Mike Crouch issued a prepared statement on the situation following Friday's meeting.
Crouch tells KVOE News further discussions and next steps for the district will be released "in the coming days." At this time no interim superintendent has been named.
Emporia National Education Association President Erica Huggard also issued a statement saying, "I wish him the best and we look forward to working with the new superintendent."
Crouch says next steps, including the naming of an interim superintendent, will become clear "in the coming days."
Case was hired in 2016 to replace Theresa Davidson, who retired after six years leading the district. Prior to coming to Emporia, Case had been superintendent at Inman dating back to 1999. He had also worked as a principal at Smoky Valley High School in Lindsborg.
Case had piloted Emporia through the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and also moved the district through major renovations through the $78 million Building for the Future bond project approved last year and now seeing work at Walnut Elementary, Emporia High and a brand-new early childhood learning facility near Riverside School. In March 2019, the board voted 4-3 to retain Case after concerns about leadership style, negotiating methods and management practices brought forward by staff and parents.
This is a developing story. We'll have much more on this story on KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media.
