S.D. sees third-highest coronavirus case increase since pandemic start, two more deaths - Argus Leader

Two more people have died of the coronavirus in South Dakota, and the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state increased by 193 on Friday, the third highest one-day count for new cases since the start of the pandemic.

South Dakota has a total of 159 COVID-19 deaths, according to the South Dakota Department of Health. 

One woman who died of COVID-19 was a Clay County resident, and one woman who died was a Lake County resident. One was in the 60-69 age range, and one was in the 80+ age range, according to the health department. The death was Clay County's first, and Lake County now has six total deaths.

South Dakota has a total of 10,884 COVID-19 cases as of Friday, according to the state health department. That doesn't include people who show symptoms or are asymptomatic but are not tested. A total of 2,692 test results were reported for 1,667 people on Friday. The positive rate for people tested for the coronavirus on Friday was 11.5%.

Besides Friday, the highest one-day counts were 239 new cases on May 8 and 249 new cases on May 9, which occurred in the middle of the mass testing of Smithfield Foods employees.

The state has 1,376 active COVID-19 cases, according to the state health department. Recoveries statewide increased to 9,349. Eight more people have been hospitalized and 50 are currently hospitalized. The state health department says 948 total people have been hospitalized during the pandemic.

Cases in Minnehaha County increased by 62 to a total of 4,819, and Lincoln County's cases increased by 18 to a total of 768 cases, according to the state health department. Of the cases, 4,280 have recovered in Minnehaha County, and 651 cases have recovered in Lincoln County.

Pennington County had a 19-case increase to 994 total cases, and Brown County's cases increased by 18 to 521 total cases on Friday, according to the health department.

Meade County saw an 11-case increase to 138 total cases, according to the health department.

Lawrence County increased by seven to 90 total cases, and Custer County increased by six cases to 64 total cases, according to the health department.

Bon Homme, Codington and Grant counties' cases increased by four each to 36 total in Bon Homme, 195 in Codington and 38 in Grant, according to the health department.

Beadle, Brookings, Corson, Walworth and Ziebach counties had three new cases each for 605 total cases in Beadle, 169 total in Brookings, 52 total in Corson, 27 total in Walworth and 38 total in Ziebach, according to the health department.
