CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Health reported Sunday that the number of confirmed or probable infections of the novel coronavirus has risen to 1,104,648 -- up only 268 since Saturday.

The state did not report any new deaths in the last 24 hours. According to the state’s COVID-19 dashboard, the total number of deaths is no longer available daily. It will be updated two times a week.

The state reported 379 new cases Saturday.

In the past 24 hours, COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide rose by 12, which is far fewer than the 21-day rolling average of 74 daily hospitalizations. Two COVID-19 patients were transferred to the ICU in the past 24 hours, while the current 21-day rolling average sits at 9.

Sunday’s case count is much lower than the 21-day rolling average, which is currently 655. It is also the smallest daily change in cases reported since March 31, 2020. While it’s important to remember that coronavirus testing was limited in the early days of the pandemic, the figure on March 31 was 266.

Gov. Mike DeWine’s office announced Saturday that the two-week statewide average of cases per 100,000 residents is at 49.5. DeWine had originally said that the statewide coronavirus restrictions would be lifted once the cases per 100,000 residents was below 50; those restrictions were lifted on June 2.

Ohio reported another 10,109 COVID-19 vaccines started, meaning at least one dose has been given, as of Sunday afternoon. A total of 5,380,145 vaccines have been started in the state, representing 46.03% of Ohio’s population. A total of 4,763,734 vaccinations have been completed (40.75% of Ohio’s population).

Coronavirus statistics on weekends often lag due to reporting delays.

There are more than 173 million confirmed cases of coronavirus and greater than 3.7 million deaths worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins researchers. In the U.S., there are more than 33 million confirmed cases of coronavirus and greater than 597,000 COVID-19 deaths.
