Massachusetts launches crime statistics tracking website to increase transparency, accountability - Boston Herald

A new crime statistics database being rolled out by the state breaks down detailed information on arrests, hate crimes, sexual assaults and more from hundreds of local and state police departments for the first time in one place.

“This site leverages information technology to promote transparency and accountability,” Secretary of Public Safety and Security Thomas Turco said in a statement. “It will serve as a valuable tool for researchers, municipal leaders, and residents alike.”

The new database, launched by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, fulfills an obligation of a criminal justice reform bill signed by Gov. Charlie Baker two years ago. It provides options to view annual crime data statewide or by municipality, theme-based reports on hate crimes and other topics and detailed quarterly arrestee information by city or town dating back to 1994.

The crime tracking website is pre-populated with data from local law enforcement agencies that use the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System, which covers 95 percent of the Commonwealth’s cities, towns, schools, and hospitals. State police data is expected to be on the system by December and can be accessed through a separate link in the interim.

The grant-funded website aims to promote accountability and transparency by allowing users to analyze detailed crime and arrest data from across the state, according to a press release. It comes as demands to increase police accountability reach an inflection point in the United States. Protests have erupted in cities across the nation pushing for police reforms, including Massachusetts where legislators are negotiating a series of sweeping reforms on Beacon Hill.
