• Associated Press: New COVID-19 Cases In Florida Plunge Before Primary Election. “Florida reported about 3,900 new cases of the coronavirus Sunday, the lowest daily total in nearly two months. The number of Floridians dying of the disease – 107 – also took a dramatic downward turn from the last few days.”
• NPR News: The Fight Over Masks In Florida Counties. “As the Ocala mask ordinance takes effect, the Marion County sheriff revised his department’s policy on Friday after national attention. His deputies will still be prevented from wearing masks, but now visitors to the department’s offices will have the option to wear masks after all.”
• Florida Politics: Kat Cammack leads a crowded pack in the CD 3 battle royale. “It wasn’t until December 2019 that (U.S. Rep. Ted) Yoho made his exit official. Once he did, a flood of Republican hopefuls set their sights on the sprawling North Central Florida district.”
• Associated Press: Florida To Resume High School Football Over Doctors’ Advice. “Football games and other competitions could start Sept. 4, but the 67 countywide school districts plus private schools will have until Sept. 18 to resume if they want to participate in the state playoffs.”
• Sarasota Herald-Tribune: DeSantis says Florida schools with coronavirus cases shouldn’t be quick to shut down again. “DeSantis said he expects school districts to take each outbreak on a ‘case by case basis’ and endorsed a more ‘surgical approach’ that does not lead to automatic school closures.”
• TCPalm ($): St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara tested positive for COVID-19 after attending statewide conference. “Mascara has ‘no doubt’ he contracted the coronavirus at the conference in Bonita Springs July 27-28, he told TCPalm Friday, because it was the first time he had traveled outside of the county since the beginning of the pandemic.”
• News4Jax: Gov. DeSantis suspends Clay County Sheriff Darryl Daniels. “The order signed by DeSantis states in part that ‘it is in the best interests of the residents of the Clay County, and the citizens of the State of Florida, that Darryl Daniels be immediately suspended from the public office, which he now holds, upon the grounds set forth in this executive order.'”
• Tampa Bay Times ($): Online, in-person students will share a teacher. ‘I don’t see how it can work.’ “Teachers and parents have inundated Pinellas School Board members with complaints that the combining of virtual and face-to-face students was not what the district promised when it rolled out its reopening model. The Hillsborough and Pasco school districts are encountering similar concerns.”
• St. Augustine Record ($): Crew begins work at St. Augustine Confederate memorial. “Crews have started preparing St. Augustine’s Confederate for removal from the Plaza de la Constitucion, but the process could take weeks.”
