COVID-19 case count nears 3,000 - West Hawaii Today

The Big Island reported 63 new COVID-19 cases Sunday, most of which were reported by the Department of Public Safety Saturday among inmates at Hawaii Community Correctional Center. With the new cases, the island’s total case count now stands at 2,949.

Statewide, 122 new cases were reported by the Department of Health with 48 of those cases on Oahu, six in Maui County and two on Kauai. Three cases were residents diagnosed out of state. Since the end of last February, 36,246 people have tested positive for COVID-19 across Hawaii.

Over the past two weeks, the Big Island has reported 129 cases, or an average of 14.4 cases per day.

The Big Island had a 3.3% positive rate, over the state’s 1.1% positivity rate on Sunday.

Also Sunday, a total of 48 patients with the virus were in Hawaii hospitals with three reported on the Big Island.

One new coronavirus-related death was reported on Sunday on Oahu. Of the 500 coronavirus-related deaths confirmed and reported by the state to date, 388 were on Oahu, 54 were on Maui, 53 were on the Big Island and two on Kauai. Three deaths were among residents outside the state.
