The average number of newly reported Covid-19 cases in the U.S. has fallen below 30,000 and are steadily decreasing, as more of the nation gets vaccinated against the deadly illness.

The seven-day average was 25,270 as of Sunday, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, and the 14-day average was 29,241. It was the second day in a row that both figures were lower than 30,000--the first time they have been at that level since last June.

In 25 states and the District of Columbia, more than half of adult residents are now fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And at least four states, including Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine and Connecticut, have fully vaccinated more than half of their total populations, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of CDC data.

Nationally, more than 39% of people have been fully vaccinated and over 49% have had at least one vaccine dose. An average of 1.8 million doses of vaccine were administered each day for the past week, down from two million a week earlier.

There were 12,853 new Covid-19 cases reported in the U.S. for Sunday, according to the latest Johns Hopkins data. That was down from 16,864 a week earlier. About a third of states don’t report cases or deaths on the weekends.

Hospitalizations have also been easing, with the latest data posted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services showing 27,823 Covid-19 patients in hospitals across the country, down from 44,622 a month ago.

There were 190 deaths reported, Johns Hopkins data show, down from 262 a week earlier. The latest daily figures bring the overall number of cases reported in the U.S. to more than 33.1 million, and the death toll to nearly 590,000.

Two leading vaccines offer reduced but still significant protection against a variant of coronavirus first identified in India, according to a U.K. study. The findings add to evidence that existing vaccines are broadly effective against most circulating variants of the virus, especially in preventing severe illness and death.

With the number of vaccinated people growing steadily, communities across the U.S. are grappling with whether and how to require or ask people to wear masks, now that the CDC has changed its guidance to say vaccinated people can congregate without them in most cases.

World-wide, nearly 167.2 million cases have been reported in all, according to Johns Hopkins data, and more than 3.46 million people have died.
