The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged a woman with a hate crime this week after Berkeley police arrested her in connection with abusive public behavior toward two Asian women, authorities said.

According to police, the women were walking just before 4 p.m. April 30 on a sidewalk past bank ATMs near Telegraph and Durant avenues when a woman sitting in front of an ATM cursed at one of the two women, referencing her ethnicity.

The woman then threw water bottles at the women before walking away. Officers who responded soon found the woman, identified as a 56-year-old homeless person, and arrested her, police said.

The district attorney’s office charged her Tuesday with battery, use of offensive words meant to disturb the peace, and willful threats against a person based on perceived characteristics.

The incident mirrors Berkeley police’s January arrest of the woman after she publicly abused a different woman. https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2021/01/14/woman-arrested-as-berkeley-battery-hate-crime-suspect/

She was in custody Wednesday night at Santa Rita Jail facing an arraignment hearing Thursday afternoon at Dublin’s East County Hall of Justice, according to a county records check.
